Vermont Public Health Association Receives National Grant

The Vermont Public Health Association (VtPHA) has announced that it will receive one of 31 national grant awards from the American Public Health Association (APHA) designed to build capacity and strengthen infrastructure of the nation’s 53 state and regional affiliates. The $35,600 grant, part of a $5.9 million grant awarded to the APHA by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in 2006, will help Affiliates build on their successful initiatives and support their grassroots policy network, while improving the nation’s ability to respond to new and emerging public health threats.

“Our affiliated public health associations are not only essential to the work of APHA, but they also play a crucial role in protecting public health across our nation,” said Georges C. Benjamin, M.D. executive director of APHA. “With a variety of pressing health concerns facing Americans, it is imperative that our Affiliates have the infrastructure required to meet the needs of those in their communities. We thank the W.K. Kellogg Foundation for their investment in our nation’s health.”

According to VtPHA board chair, Burton W. Wilcke, Jr., Ph.D., associate professor and chair of medical laboratory and radiation sciences at the University of Vermont, “This new APHA initiative will help us build on our work-to-date in providing leadership, influencing health policy and leading community programs in Vermont.”

Founded in 2002, the mission of the Vermont Public Health Association is “to protect and promote personal, community and environmental health” in Vermont. The organization’s published public policy statements center on health access, healthy communities, and public health infrastructure.
